To the amazement of his companions, Gandhi calmly took off his other shoe and threw it back along the track ②to land close to the first. Asked by a fellow passenger ③ why he did so, Gandhi smiled. "The poor man who finds the shoes ④ lied on the track," he replied, "will now have a pair he can use." 2. Laura : What's the matter, honey? Bill : Laura, I got fired today at work. Laura : Oh dear! How did it happen? Bill : The company has decided to downsize its workforce. Laura : Well, did you speak with your boss? Bill : Yes, I did. But no such luck. Laura : I thought you were Ted's right-hand man! Bill : Yeah, but _______________________. Laura : Keep your chin up. I think he is making a big mistake. ① he made it up to me ② he filed a lawsuit against me ③ he stabbed me in the back ④ he took my word for it 문 3. Toward the end of the Middle Ages, man began to specialize in surgery, but performed no operations. They confined their work to dressing wounds. Surgical operations were performed only by barbers or by vagrant practitioners who wandered about the country or set up their booths at fairs. The surgery of the time was so ____________________ that Gregory of Tours, in the sixth century, advised that the people should emulate the saints and endure their pain with patience rather than submit to operation. ① thorough and elaborate ② crude and barbarous ③ effective but painful ④ professional but costly 문 4. Russian military vehicles crossed the border into Ukraine on Thursday, ① prompted a skirmish between Ukrainian and Russian forces, acting Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said. According to Avakov, tanks crossed the border at a checkpoint ② controlled by pro-Russian separatists in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine. Armored vehicles and artillery were part of the columns, Avakov said, ③ cited Ukrainian intelligence. The incident ④ was occurred in the midst of Ukrainian leaders' campaign of violence against people living in the largely pro-Russian east. Robert Schuman's works for the piano are acknowledged as brilliant masterworks. However, his large scale orchestral works have always suffered by comparison to those of contemporaries such as Mendelssohn and Brahms. Perhaps this is because Schuman's works should be measured with a different yardstick. His works are often considered poorly orchestrated, but they actually have an unusual aesthetic. He treats the orchestra as he does the piano: one grand instrument with a uniform sound. This is so different from the approach of most composers that, to many, it has seemed like a failing rather than a conscious artistic choice. ① The greatness of Schuman's piano works ② The difference between piano works and orchestral music ③ The reassessment of Schuman's musical works ④ The influence of Schuman's performances ※ 다음 글의 내용과 일치하지 않는 것을 고르시오. 6. A Happy Place is the first novel of Amy Langton. It has to be said that this is rather obvious, at least in some parts of the book. Undoubtedly, she has a gift for description but her descriptive passages are often prolix and her use of language is frequently rather forced. She seems to be trying too hard. I wonder if she works with a thesaurus constantly at her elbow. If so, she should use it more sparingly. Then there is the fact that the plot is so convoluted that it is almost impossible to follow. I kept having to turn back several pages because I had got completely lost. ① Amy Langton has flaws in her first novel. ② Amy Langton should avoid using many verbose passages. ③ Amy Langton is advised to use synonym finders on a more regular basis. ④ Amy Langton has to employ fewer twists and turns in the plot of her novel. 문 7. Poet James Dickey was one of those people who could make good on every boast. A college football and track star, he flew 100 missions in World War II. He was a successful advertising writer, an expert archer, and a guitar player. He also published more than 20 volumes of poetry, for which he won a National Book Award. The irony is that outside of the small audience for American poetry, Dickey was famous not as a poet but as the author of gripping novels. This must have rankled him, because he always insisted he wrote his three novels merely to pay the rent. But this is only one of many inconsistencies that crease through Dickey's life. He came from a family that had, he admitted, "no interest in the arts, and none had as little interest as I." He never quite got over his youthful anti-intellectualism. ① James Dickey participated in the Second World War. ② James Dickey was known to general public more for his novels than poetry. ③ James Dickey was proud of his family's intellectual heritage. ④ James Dickey showed talents in many areas. → This lightweight golf cart will fold and fit in the trunk of my car. → Arnold is one of handful youngsters with ideas for a new business. → Educational problems should solve upon the agreement of the society members. → The lecture series are intended for those who are not used to deal with financial issues. → It is important that you do it yourself rather than rely on others. → My car, parked in front of the bank, was towed away for illegal parking. → I'll lend you with money provided you will pay me back by Saturday. → The game might have been played if the typhoon had not been approaching. The Philippines' most active volcano is showing signs of awakening. Mount Mayon, located in the eastern Philippines, has been sending huge chunks of lava rolling down its slopes in a gradual eruption that could soon turn (A) . The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has warned that a "hazardous eruption" of the volcano is possible within just a few weeks. The eruption has been slow and gentle, but overnight on September 17, the volcano produced nearly four times the number of lava fragments than the day before, and super-hot boulders have been spotted from as far as 7 miles away. "Currently, the activity is just lava coming down. If there is an explosion, all sides of the volcano are threatened," said Renato Solidum, director of the institute. The Philippine government does not want to take any chances. Many towns surrounding the volcano are government-declared danger zones, and authorities have already begun (B) thousands of villagers. Fighting and wars in Somalia over the past two decades stopped all mail deliveries. The postal service collapsed in 1991. Somalia is now enjoying a more peaceful time, so the postal service is returning. The new service also sees the introduction of nationwide postcodes. This will be a first for Somalia. The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications said that at first, Somalis would be able to receive letters from abroad, and that the next step would be for people to post letters to other countries. The return of the postal service is just one example of Somalia getting back to normal after its long period of trouble. Another recent example is the introduction of a cash machine (an ATM) at a luxury hotel in the capital city Mogadishu. It is the first time Somalia has ever had an ATM. Somalis are very excited to hear the news. ① Mogadishu Bank reopened for the first time in over 20 years. ② The postal service in Somalia would include sending letters to other countries. ③ The reopening of a luxury hotel is an example of Somalia getting back to normal. ④ A private company played a leading role in restarting the postal system in Somalia. When people sit together with friends at a meal, they are said to break bread with one another. This expression symbolizes a setting where friends come together in a warm, inviting and jovial manner to eat. Bread has been called the staff of life. The type of bread consumed by a person has been known to indicate social standing. For instance, white bread has traditionally been eaten by the upper class while dark bread is consumed by the poor. Superstitions about bread have also been documented. Greek soldiers take a piece of bread from home into battle to ensure their safe and triumphant return home. English midwives would place a loaf of bread at the foot of a new mother's bed to prevent the woman and her child from being kidnapped by evil spirits. ① Close human relationship ② Different social status ③ Folk beliefs ④ Daily routines 영 어 3 책형 3 쪽 문 14. Libraries are supposed to be quiet. W : Well, not this one. Someone’s phone always seemed to be ringing. It drove me crazy. M : ______________________________________________ W : It sure does! There are signs saying to turn off your phone or put it on silence mode. But most people don’t seem to care. ① Wasn't there any librarian who could stop them? ② Why didn’t you tell them to turn off their phones? ③ Doesn't the library have a policy about cell phones? ④ What could you do about it? ① Sharks have been looked more or less the same for hundreds of millions of years. ② "They have evolved through time to improve upon the basic model," says John Maisey, a paleontologist who helped identify the fossil. ③ The skeleton supporting this ancient shark's gills is completely different from those of a modern shark's. ④ Previously, many scientists had been believed that shark gills were an ancient system that predated modern fish. A hypnotized person _____________ a kind of trance, a state in which someone can move and speak but is not conscious in a normal way. ① looms on ② lapses into ③ levels at ④ laps against 문 19. Both groups were then placed in the same escapeavoidance condition: they could avoid the shock if they jumped over a barrier after hearing a tone. Perhaps the most dramatic evidence that organisms can be aware of the contingency (or lack thereof) between their behavior and reinforcement is found in the experiments on learned helplessness. In a prototypical experiment by Seligman and Maier, dogs were given painful shocks at unpredictable intervals. ( ① ) A control group of dogs could avoid the shocks by pressing the lever, whereas the experimental group could have no means at all to escape the shock. ( ② ) Thus one group of dogs learned a behavior that would eliminate shock, whereas the other did not. ( ③ ) Dogs in the control group, which could control their shock in the first phase, readily learned to jump over the barrier. ( ④ ) In contrast, the experimental dogs whined and yelped but made no attempt to escape the shock. They had learned that nothing they could do would prevent shock―that there was no contingency between their behavior and receiving shock. The last time the dollar was worth more than the euro was all the way back in December 2002, just three years after the common European currency came into existence. But in the years after that, the euro (A) strength as the continent imported less and exported more. The euro soared to an all-time high of $1.59. It was enough that, in 2007, former Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan wondered if the euro would (B) the dollar as the world's reserve currency―in other words, the benchmark that everyone uses in case of emergency― and even supermodel Gisele Bundchen reportedly insisted on being paid in euros. That's quite a consensus. But it turns out that these reports of the dollar's death were greatly exaggerated. Since then, the euro has fallen 24 percent against the dollar in less than a year, and made everyone (C) its grand ambitions. (A) (B) (C) ① gained replace forget ② maintained endorse enjoy ③ increased expel pursue ④ lost represent abandon
