Amid the confusion and clutter of the natural environment,
predators concentrate their search on telltale signs,
ignoring everything else. There is a great benefit to
this: When you specialize in searching for specific
details, even cryptically colored prey can seem obvious.
But there is also a cost to paying too close attention,
since you can become blind to the alternatives. When a
bird searches intently for caterpillars that look like
twigs, it misses nearby moths that look like bark. The
benefit of concealing coloration is not that it provides a
solid guarantee of survival, but that it consistently
yields a small advantage in the chance of living
through each successive threatening encounter. At a
minimum, even a tiny delay between the approach of a
predator and its subsequent attack can help a prey
animal escape. And at best, the prey will be completely
overlooked.
